The Tonic Reviews
5.0 out of 5 stars Small but complete
By Gingerlily (Ireland)
I just read this little story in one go, and was very impressed with it. The characters were vivid and appealing, the setting was lovely, and the story was satisfying. I liked the way it didn't take itself too seriously, and the sly and well deserved swipe at the attitudes of big money industry. I would thoroughly recommend this as a short but delightful read.

A joy to read. Recommended without any qualms it won't be enjoyed. Sure to delight the most hardened reader. Beverley Carter is a new author to me but I shall definitely read more from her.

I really liked this novella. It is a great concept and I really enjoyed the characters, particularly Rose. A very easy read with a very interesting plot.
5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable novella :)

A great novella, with lovely characters and a good plot. The whole medicine/pharmacy thing has made it really interesting, but it was kept easy and straightforward (politics can become rather complicated sometimes in this field). Characters are very likeable, I wanted Rose to be my granny ! The end was totally unexpected, and while all of it is fiction, the whole story is very believable.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great little story

Just finished this book, really enjoyed it.
The story is very simple with goodies and baddies (large company vs an old lady). The characters are all very
strong and the ending is not totally what I was expecting.
Want to say more but can't as it would sort of spoil the story. All I can say is that its really worth a read.
Great book to read over a few cups of coffee on the sofa on a cold winter night.
5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful tale with a twist

I very much enjoyed reading this novella about a big pharmaceutical company battling against a 96 year old lady in the hopes that the recipe for her tonic will make them some big money. I found the story to be well-written and fast paced; it was a gripping read. The characters were very likeable and I loved the twist to the ending.
5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious and satisfying

This little novella is a gem. I read it in an evening and it had everything I want from a book. Beverley Carter writes very well. The story was intriguing, the characters, in spite of the fact that the work was short, were well balanced. There was a forthright and practical 96 year old, a keen but concerned researcher, an efficient yet sensitive doctor's secretary and of course, the dastardly pharmaceutical industry, bent on profit. The story was well paced and I almost read it at a sitting it was so good.
There is a glorious and satisfying end to this little book too. What more could you want? I would recommend this work without hesitation.
